A series of shots were needed to create this panoramic scene of Mendenhall Lake, the glacier, several icebergs and Nugget Falls. This glacier, at this time, stretches over 13 miles and is one of 37 that flow down from the Juneau’s 1500 square mile ice field.
Factoid: In the 1990’s the glacier was retreating at 30 ft/yr, and by the 200o’s, it has increased to over 200 ft/yr. Park officials have estimated that 40 years from now the glacier won’t be visible from the visitor’s center!!! This is one of the few glaciers in the state that is so accessible! The trails provide scenic viewpoints everywhere, and if getting face-to-face with some blue ice is on your bucket list, head on in!
