Yellow Thistle

The yellow thistle (Cirsium horridulum) is a tall branching “pasture weed of the South” with large yellow or red-purple flower heads and very spiny, clasping leaves.  It piqued my interest when I read that in rare instances the blossom is yellow, which contradicted what was seen surrounding many grassy areas of the ponds at Hagan Stone Park!
